Educator Boot Camp

Hosted by the Fine Family Academy of Educators, Educator Boot Camp is a specialized, intensive faculty development program designed to optimize teaching, educational leadership, and other academic skills in health sciences education.

These boot camps are intended to encourage Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University educators to constantly develop their skills inside and outside the classroom.

Part 1: 11 a.m. -1 pm - From gut instinct to research (the 5-question strategy)

Part 2: 4 - 6 p.m. - Writing tips for qualitative research

Both sessions via Zoom. Space is limited to the first 20 people that register for each session.

Introduction to Qualitative Research Design (2-day course)

Offered by: Dr. Sayra Cristancho, Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery and a Scientist, Centre for Education Research & Innovation (CERI) at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at Western University, London, Ontario, Canada.

Purpose

  • To understand the key principles of descriptive qualitative research and the key steps for designing interviews and conducting thematic analysis
  • To become more informed readers of qualitative research

Outcomes
Participants will leave the course able to:

  • Discuss the features of a good research question framed from the perspective of a qualitative study of social phenomena in health professions education
  • Describe the key features of a descriptive qualitative study
  • Perform, with guidance, a participant research interview
  • Analyze an interview, with guidance, using coding strategies for thematic analysis.
  • Discuss the key elements for undertaking a qualitative research project and some of the obstacles that you might personally face in trying to design and conduct the study.
